The Carnival Pride Baltimore to Bermuda cruise was an excellent cruise! Being able to spend 2 1/2 days at port in Bermuda was awesome! We had plenty of time to rent a moped and explore all of the tiny islands in Bermuda. The weather in Bermuda was perfect and the locals were super friendly. It had a much safer and more formal feel to it, than the islands that we’ve visited in the Caribbean. Be sure to eat Bermudian Fish Chowder while in Bermuda and explore the far side of Bermuda. Although beautiful, the King’s Wharf area of Bermuda where the port is does not do Bermuda justice. Be *SURE* to explore other parts of the island. Otherwise, you might head back out sea feeling a little disappointed. I’ve been to an abundance of tropical places and the overall experience of Bermuda trumps them all (Hawaii included) in my opinion. This was our second Carnival cruise and the service and food on the ship was equally-outstanding. Be sure to attend the formal dinners (at least while you’re sailing). The food at the formal dinners is the best. Also, be sure to eat the omelets for breakfast. The only negative thing that I can say about the Carnival Pride is that the chairs by the pool areas seem to always be claimed with towels. Carnival should devise some sort of system to police that. While aboard the Carnival Elation last year, we seldom had a problem finding chairs pool-side. The Carnival Pride is a much larger and more well-appointed ship than the Elation. The Serenity deck …

Betsy has written two books on Salvias, the latest is The New Book of Salvias available from Timber Press and has grown hundreds of Salvias in her own gardens. Many types of Salvia thrive in heat, sun and dry conditions, making them invaluable in pots and gardens to bust up the “August blahs.” Many are hardy and all attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Explore along with Dave as he discovers the Insect Zoo, which is part of the Children’s Zoo at the San Francisco Zoo. More than 40 people have been killed, says Japanese TV, but the scale of the damage is still unclear. Thousands of people are being evacuated from coastal areas in the north and are being urged to take refuge on higher ground. A nuclear alert was announced as fire broke out at one plant. Others were safely shut down. In Sendai the sheer power of the water swept away cars and lorries. Boats smashed into a bridge as motorists continued driving. In one part of northeastern Japan a ship carrying 100 people was swept away, according to local reports. It is not known what has happened to them. The epicentre of the earthquake was nearly 400km from Tokyo off the northeastern coast. The tsunami warning covers the whole Pacific basin apart from the US and Canada — taking in countries from Russia to Australia and Central and South America. The fear is that the damage in Japan could be reproduced around the Pacific. The Red Cross in Geneva has said that the wave is higher than some islands in its path. The tsunami is said to be travelling at 500 kilometres an hour. Airports as far as Hawaii have been shut down. There are reports of foreign tourists panicking on the US territory of Guam.
